Gear Up Girl SA is taking place on Sunday 20 November. This year’s edition will have a gourmet touch, with every rider getting a complimentary glass of bubbles and the option to purchase gourmet cheese at The Finish Line.

South Australia has a bit of an issue when it comes to cycling and women. Only one out of five cyclists on Adelaide’s streets are female. Compared to Europe, the number of female riders are significantly less than that of men. (In bike-friendly countries like the Netherlands, more than half of all cyclists are women and around a quarter of all trips are on bikes.)

The question is why? Well, it’s got a lot to do with safety. Most women in car-dominated cities such as Adelaide don’t ride because of safety concerns.

Gear Up Girl SA – The perfect chance to get out on the bike in safe conditions

That’s why Bike SA’s Gear Up Girl SA event is a great way for women to have a go for the first time. It’s a case of safety in numbers and all you have to worry about is riding.  Bike SA has routes clearly signposted and even a police escort through the city at the start. The event is Adelaide’s biggest bike ride for women (held on Sunday 20 November) – at the end of the day it’s about bring friends together and enjoying a great day out on the bike. It doesn’t matter how fast you get to the finish line, what matters is the fun you have on the way there!

Bikes, Beach & Bubbles
