At the end of Stage 1, Malcolm Olle sat down and made some predictions about the TDU. Was he right?
As a disclaimer, I’m not a professional punter. I’m a cycling addict – and some may proclaim my words as lunacy – others may hail me as a prophet in the days to come. So here goes. At the end of the first stage – I sat down and wrote a few predictions about the TDU. Some (albeit most) I’ve already got wrong – but let’s just wait and see what happens on the final day.
My big call – Team UniSA will win
I went to the teams presentation last Saturday evening and watched the UniSA team have a chat with Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin. The team sound like they are in cracking form and I thought immediately – “they can win this”. That thought has not gone away. Jack Bobridge’s Stage 1 win after a fantastic four rider breakaway blew the peloton into the weeds. It was superb cycling.
Stage 2 Win – Robert Power
Okay, so perhaps I got this wrong. But I was so sure Robert Power would come out and play. I guess the Spaniard Lobato was just too good.
Stage 3 Win – Cadel Evans
I thought that the Paracombe finish on stage 3 would be a climbers blitzkrieg, so I stuck my biro on a list and Cadel Evans got the dot. Unfortunately his Rohan Dennis managed to pip him – but hey I was closer on this one.
Stage 4 Win – Heinrich Haussler
Now stage four, I think this one is made for the Australian Road Champion, Heinrich Haussler. IAM will become we are and do everything they can to win this stage into Mt Barker – they have a team of experience.
Stage 5 Win – Jack Bobridge
Good ol’ Willunga Hill stage five – man is it tough. I am not a paid up member of the soothsayers union, so this is a gut feeling guess – I reckon Jack Bobridge and UniSA will give this everything. Jack’s in fine form and he’s training for the World Hour record on Jan 31st so he will build his endurance and strength during this race. (I can hear howls of laughter in the background.)
Stage 6 – Who cares
By this point in time it’s all over – Jack has already won by a second over Cadel UniSA win the team jerseys, what a race!
