Bikes Palya has been funded through a Special Community Youth Grant* and the support of the CMV Foundation for a vehicle supplied by CMI Toyota. We thanks these organisations for valuing the outcomes that Bikes Palya can achieve.
Bikes Palya is a program for kids and communities in the APY Lands. Palya means "great" in Pitjantjatjara. Bikes are Great.
There's something awesome about the thrill and joy kids get riding bikes in the outback communities of the APY lands.
Bikes Palya translates the excitement of cycling into learning opportunities for aboriginal youth through programs that reinforce values of pride and responsibility while creating a healthy pastime. In schools where attendance can be very low, Bikes Palya! aims to drive attendance rates higher and to engage with typically hard to reach youth through the power of the bike.
To watch our program in action, check out the video made by students during our 2013 trip to Amata, APY lands. You'll see what we mean about the joy that can come from riding.
Bikes Palya! is an energetic hub of bike-focused creative, mechanical, physical, and community activities. Here are just some of the things we get up to out in the lands:
In-school activities - Students learn safety and skills starring in their own learning videos, playing bike games, and going on adventures rides through the community and bush.
After-school sessions - Bike maintenance workshops and other after school events like movie night and silk screening workshops bring the community together to learn more about bikes while having fun.
BMX track building - Many APY communities have very few sealed roads to ride on. Bikes Palya! helps build BMX tracks and jumps in those communities. It provides an alternative healthy recreational activity in environments where the options are often very limited.
Bikes Palya Gifting - Everybody wants to have a go, however due to the remote location and harsh riding conditions, there are often not enough bush-ready treadlies to go around. One of the goals of Bikes Palya is to make sure APY schools have enough bikes for kids to learn to fix, ride, and maintain.
Yes! We are always looking for used BMX and bush ready single speed youth bikes for kids to build, maintain, and keep for their schools.
Bikes Palya! is the new Bike SA indigenous youth program servicing the outback communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands.
Like most South Australian youth, APY kids love having fun on bikes. Their high skill level and sense of adventure makes riding a strong source of pride as well as a healthy pastime. Because of their remote location, they don't have immediate access to the kinds of bikes needed for harsh desert conditions.
All bikes donated through the Bikes Palya! Program will be fixed and maintained by youth to be given to their schools at the end of term.
