How fit do I need to be to participate in VeloVino? Do I need to be a fast rider?

VeloVino involves riding distances of between 50km and 80km each day. The average is about 50-60km.
You don't need to be an elite athlete! But a reasonable level of fitness will ensure you can manage the full distance of approximately 250km over 5 days.
You can ride at your own pace each day and rest assured that our support team won't leave anyone behind.
If you're not sure how long it will take you to ride a certain distance you can refer to the comparison chart below to get a rough idea. Please note that these times do not take into account additional time spent at refreshment stops, taking photos, sightseeing, etc.

We strongly recommend that you make the effort to plan and execute a suitable training schedule in the weeks leading up to the tour. Check out our My Training info sheet for more information.

Where does the ride start from?

VeloVino 2018 will start and finish in the heart of the City of Adelaide.

What time is check-in on the first day?
All riders will need to sign-in and collect their Ride Pack and jersey on Sunday 31 March. This can be done at the Bike SA office at 53 Carrington St Adelaide between 1200 and 1800.

How much luggage can I take?

The total luggage allowance is 25kg but individual luggage items must not exceed 14kg (it's easier and safer to pack two lighter bags than one big bag).

Do I need to put my bike in a box for the coach transfer between Victor Harbor and Woodside?

It is not necessary to pack your bike into a box for the coach transfer. We have plenty of cardboard/blankets to cushion the transported bikes. You may, however, have to turn the handlebars and / or remove the pedals, depending on the available space.

What sort of bike should I take?

The VeloVino Tour is generally a road ride, but there will be some days when there may be opportunities to explore further on unsealed roads and trails. The ride is suitable for either a road bike, hybrid or mountain bike (with strong legs). Whilst the vast majority of the route is on sealed roads there is the opportunity on some days to take a more scenic route and explore the region on unsealed roads - not ideal for the skinny tyres but should be okay with hybrid, touring, CX or MTB tyres.

Can I hire a bike in Adelaide for the Tour?

If you don't want the hassle of transporting a bike to Adelaide you can hire one from Bike SA . We have limited numbers of Avanti and Apollo road bikes and also some Scott Aspect and Avanti Atomic mountain bikes for hire. Slick tyres for sealed roads can be fitted if requested. Are electric / E-bikes allowed on VeloVino?

Yes, you are more than welcome to use an electric assist bicycle, provided that it complies with Australian Standards and does not exceed the maximum power output allowed. You will need to provide your own cables for recharging batteries. Please be aware that our mechanical route support is not able to provide motor or battery repair services

I am flying in to Adelaide before Sunday's check-intime. Can I drop my gear off somewhere straight from the airport?

Yes, you can to come straight to the Bike SA office and leave your bike/bags with us - office hours are 9-5pm, 7 days a week.

How do I get my bike from the Airport to the Adelaide CBD?

Adelaide Airport Flyer offers door-to-door minibus transfers from/to Adelaide aiport, outer suburbs and surrounding area. Door-to-door 7 day service. Reservation is appreciated at least 48 hours prior to travel.

What is the cost of secure car parking in Adelaide?

Bicycle SA has made arrangements for VeloVino Tour participants to park at Rundle Mall or Hindmarsh Sq UPark gated parking stations, approximately a 10min walk from Bicycle SA's offices at 53 Carrington Street. Note: there are vehicle height limits that apply.

The cost is $64 for a five night stay per standard vehicle space. Bookings are essential as places will be offered on a first come first serve basis.

These parking facilities are multi story parks with monitored security. Please check in at Bicycle SA office first to collect your discounted parking ticket.

What happens if I am injured, unwell or family commitments prevent me from riding and participating in the event?

As per the Terms & Conditions of your registration, a non-refundable deposit of $250 is required to confirm the reservation at the time of booking. In addition, further refunds are sometimes possible - depending on the length of time that you cancel. We recommend that you take out Travel Insurance at the time of booking - to cover you for everything that could occur (cancellation due to illness/injury, lost/damaged baggage in transit, theft of bike, flight changes, etc.)

  • Cancellation notified more than 30 days prior to event - a minimum cancellation fee of $250 applies;
  • Cancellation notified 30 days or less and more than 14 days prior to event - a cancellation fee of 50% applies;
  • Cancellation notified 14 days or less prior to event - a cancellation fee of 100% applies
