Adelaide City Council - Bicycle Action Plan September 2008

Recently, the Adelaide city Council released their Bicycle Action Plan 2008-2011. This is a new strategy and is guided by the principles that the cycling environment in the City will achieve; connectivity and accessibility, safety and visibility, amenity, opportunity and sustainability.
Bicycle SA endorses this approach taken by the City. It is comprehensive, in that it is not just about providing infrastructure but acknowledges the need for education programs, the importance of providing encouragement through community leadership as well as understanding the benefits of undertaking research to better inform the development of behaviour change initiatives that will get more people riding in the City.

Significantly, the release of the Strategy Plan was accompanied with a funding announcement of $1.32M for three years. A link to the Plan can be found HERE and I encourage those of you with an interest to have a read.

Highlights include;

  • A commitment to the Free City Bikes scheme for the next three years. Each year, the number of residents, tourists and workers in the City who utilise this free service doubles.
  • An undertaking to complete the primary bike lane network within the City as well as the linkages to surrounding bike networks
  • A commitment to supporting the National Ride to Work Day CBD Breakfast, a terrific program that encourages more people to leave the car at home and ride to work.
  • Initiatives that break the barriers to more people riding, like increase secure and self-secured bike parking with more on road parking bays. Additionally, encouraging workplaces to provide end of trip facilities.
  • Research projects that inform the development of behaviour change programs to make it more attractive for residents within the City to ride

Bicycle SA had the opportunity to provide two briefing sessions to the Lord Mayor on the key issues for a bike friendly city. The Lord Mayor's continued commitment to increasing the opportunities for and reducing the barriers to, a bike friendly city is to be congratulated.

The challenge is now there for the State Government to match this level of commitment and provide appropriate funding to the "Safety in Numbers" State Cycling Strategy.
