REGISTRATIONS NOW OPEN: Amy's Ride SA 2010 What are you doing Sunday 7 November?
Ride the Expressway...
Challenge Yourself...
Raise Money for the Amy Gillett Foundation...
Suppport our safety message...
Bicycle SA and the Amy Gillett Foundation have been working together
since 2008 with the objective of taking a more strategic approach to
developing and promoting a number of road safety campaigns. After all,
road safety is the responsibility of all road users.
In 2009, Bicycle SA endorsed the AGF's national safety campaign of A Metre Matters.
Designed to raise awareness in the minds of motorists to ensure they
keep at least a metre between themselves and cyclists, the sight of
3,000 jerseys winding their way down the Southern Expressway for Amy's
Ride 2009 was a potent image.
With more and more South Australians taking to their bike for the first time,
we are increasingly seeing the need to encourage cyclists to reacquaint
themselves with the rules of the road. While its great news that more
people are riding, its now more important than ever to ensure cyclists
'share the responsibility' and ride within the law.
The Red Light
is the most iconic road safety image - and we believe that the most
effective follow up to the AGF's A Metre Matters campaign is one that
will focus and highlight the need for cyclists to adhere to the road
rules and therefore improve safety.
Bicycle SA is pleased to announce our safety message for this year's riding season is Red Aware.
For Amy's Ride 2010 we have responded to the feedback from last
year's ride and will provide more choice for this year - with jerseys
an optional benefit. Your registration will not only give you a unique
ride down the Southern Expressway to the beautiful McLaren Vale, but
also the chance to support the worthy regional and national initiatives
of the AGF in their quest to bring about a safer, more harmonious
relationship between cyclists and other road users. Your registration, in a first for this year, will also assist Bicycle SA to deliver our Red Aware road safety campaign.
Sponsored by the Motor Accident Commission and endorsed by the AGF, we have 2,000 Red Aware jerseys available for those who would like one - first in best dressed!
And
for all riders you have peace of mind
knowing that $20 of your registration fee will go to support the AGF,
while the proceeds of your ride fee will assist Bicycle SA to roll out
our Red Aware campaign throughout the year. 2009 saw over $70,000 raised for the AGF and this year we're hoping for over $100,000 to be raised for the Foundation.

So when you register, you will be asked if you would like a Red Aware
jersey - if you do, please tick the box and select your jersey size.
Otherwise, just continue through to the end of the registration process.
We look forward to seeing you on the road supporting the important work of the Amy Gillett Foundation and Bicycle SA.
Registrations for Amy's Ride are Noe Open! For more ride information see all the details here.
Register
NOW and make your choice ro receive an official ride jersey - remember
there are a limited number of 2,000 available. Otherwise, we thank you
for supporting the vital work of our two organisations.
Great early bird registration prizes from Ground Effect cycle clothing up for grabs too.
Road Safety Forums
South Australians have an opportunity to share their views on road safety at a series of forums to be held around the State.
The Road Safety Advisory Council will be listening to South
Australian's views and aspirations, reviewing road safety research and
consulting with experts to develop a new road safety strategy for South
Australia.
Starting 7 September 2010, the forums will be held progressively
across the State in metropolitan and regional areas, including Berri,
Victor Harbor, Kangaroo Island, Mount Gambier, Tintinara, Ceduna, Murray
Bridge, Port Lincoln, Hahndorf, Coober Pedy, Minlaton, Clare, Angaston
and Port Augusta.
These forums, along with the assistance of Adelaide Thinker in
Residence, Professor Fred Wegman - an internationally recognised road
safety expert - and the development of a national road safety strategy,
will help the Road Safety Advisory Council make recommendations to the
Minister for Road Safety and the Government of South Australia.
All South Australians share the responsibility for improving road safety
- individuals, families, communities, businesses and government.
Together, we can make our roads safer.
For more information and to register your attendance visit DTEI.
Bicycle SA Joins The Alliance
Bicycle SA has become an Alliance Member with South Australia's
Strategic Plan. Alliance Members are non-government organisations that
have identified South Australia's Strategic Plan targets to which they
are contributing in their day-to-day business. The Alliance Programme
aims to generate greater ownership of the Strategic Plan.
The first plan was launched in 2004 and the 2010 Progress Report audits
results across six objectives - Growing Prosperity, Improving Wellbeing,
Attaining Sustainability, Fostering Creativity and Innovation, Building
Communities and Expanding Opportunity. Within each objective are a
number of targets that have links to cycling, from road safety to
greenhouse gas emission reductions, from healthy weight to
participations in physical activity; all with parallels to the state
government's Safety in Numbers 2006-2010 strategy.
Between
the four-yearly Strategic Plan updates, Alliance members identify
important issues and trends, and continue conversations with government
about their efforts towards targets in the Strategic Plan. Members'
individual strategic plans are aligned to the state's Strategic Plan
targets.
Bicycle SA has
identified 19 targets which align with the state Strategic Plan, across
all of the six objectives - Growing Prosperity, Improving Wellbeing,
Attaining Sustainability, Fostering Creativity and Innovation, Building
Communities and Expanding Opportunities.
There
are over 50 other Alliance Members, from Business SA and UniSA to Sport
SA and the Local Government Association. For the full list and more
information, and to make your contribution to the conversation, visit
www.saplan.org.au.
Group Rides And Insurance Liability
We have had such a strong reposnse to this piece we're running it again...
There
has been much discussion lately on the road about the risks of
insurance liability for people who actively organise group rides.
Organisers of these types of activities do need to be mindful of the
inherent risk they are exposed to in terms of potential liability
insurance claims, should a member of the ride group or general public be
injured or damage to property occur.
Bicycle SA recognised this concern many years ago and as a result
developed an insurance package to cover our Rides Leaders in such
circumstances. Of course the other option open to ride leaders is to
register and incorporate their ride group and then seek insurance cover
for the incorporated body. In our experience though, this has proven to
be an unwieldy, costly and time consuming way to go about getting
insurance cover. After all it's much better to spend your precious time
thinking about where to ride, rather than doing paperwork.
For
Bicycle SA, group rides are a vital link in the chain in helping to get
more people riding, by providing a welcoming and supportive environment
for inexperienced riders. They are also a great way to share your love
of cycling with old friends and new. The good news is that, under a long
standing arrangement with our insurer since 2005, Bicycle SA Ride
Leaders who are fully paid members of Bicycle SA are covered for Public
Liability of $20,000,000 and Professional Indemnity of $2,000,000 when
they are delivering their ride as part of our Rides Programme.
Registering
your ride with our Rides Programme is free and easy, regardless of
whether it's a social or training ride and is a great way of getting
peace of mind by knowing that all you need to worry about is the
weather. For more information, feel free to email Maureen Merrick.
As for your fellow riders, don't forget that those who are members of
Bicycle SA are also covered with our extensive member insurance
benefits. Each year, Bicycle SA reviews the detail of our member
insurance benefits with our broker.
Our members demand value for money and we believe that we deliver.
While there are a number of cycling groups that offer insurance cover in
SA, as always we encourage riders to 'shop around' to see which package
represents best value for money for their needs. With Bicycle SA, a
quick glance shows that;
- You are covered 24hours/7 days a week ANYWHERE in Australia and New Zealand for your recreational, training and commuting riding
- Your loss of income limit is $800 per week for up to 104 weeks
- Your non-medicare medical expenses up to $5,000
But remember, we do not cover racing - so take a moment to read more HERE to make sure your insurance decision is well informed.
We look forward to seeing more and more ride groups on the roads and trails across the state.
