What's Amy's Ride all about?
Amy's Ride is a recreational mass participation road ride from Adelaide to McLaren Vale.
Amy's Ride supports the Amy Gillett Foundation and aims to help promote key messages of safe and responsible road use, increase awareness of the need for more shared respect, raise much needed funds and honour the memory of Amy Gillett who was killed by a motorist while riding in Germany.
When you ride in Amy's Ride, you are a part of a broader community supporting and encouraging mutual awareness and respect of bike riders and motorists on our roads.
In 2009, despite forecast temperatures in the mid-30's, over 3000 riders turned out to support the Amy Gillett Foundation and Bicycle SA at Amy's Ride. It was a spectacular sight to see a sea of cyclists make their way onto the Southern Expressway which was exclusively closed for the event.

'Red Aware' Road Safety Campaign
Bicycle SA and the Amy Gillett Foundation have been working together since 2008 with the objective of taking a more strategic approach to developing and promoting a number of road safety campaigns. After all, road safety is the responsibility of all road users.
In 2009, Bicycle SA endorsed the AGF's national safety campaign of A Metre Matters. Designed to raise awareness in the minds of motorists to ensure they keep at least a metre between themselves and cyclists, the sight of 3,000 jersey's winding their way down the Southern Expressway for Amy's Ride 2009 was a potent image.
With more and more South Australian's taking to their bike for the first time, we are increasingly seeing the need to encourage cyclists to reacquaint themselves with the rules of the road. While its great news that more people are riding, its now more important than ever to ensure cyclists 'share the responsibility' and ride within the law.
The Red Light is the most iconic road safety image - and we believe that the most effective follow up to the AGF's A Metre Matters campaign is one that will highlight the need for cyclists to ride responsibly and to ensure an improved road safety outcome.
Bicycle SA is pleased to announce our safety message for this year's riding season is Red Aware.
For Amy's Ride 2010 we have responded to the feedback from last year's ride and will provide more choice for this year - with jerseys an optional benefit. Your registration will not only give you a fully supported ride down the Southern Expressway to the beautiful McLaren Vale, but also the chance to support the worthy regional and national initiatives of the AGF in their quest to bring about a safer, more harmonious relationship between cyclists and other road users. In a first for this year, to also assist Bicycle SA to deliver our Red Aware road safety campaign.
Sponsored by the Motor Accident Commission and endorsed by the AGF, we have 2,000 Red Aware jerseys available for those who would like one - first in best dressed! **JERSEYS NOW SOLD OUT**
For all riders you will have peace of mind knowing that $20 of your registration fee will go direct to support the AGF, while the proceeds of your ride fee will assist Bicycle SA to roll out our Red Aware campaign throughout the year. Even if you opt for the jersey, part of your registration fee will go towards AGF's road safey campaign. Last year we raised over $70,000 for the AGF, this year we are aiming for $100,000!
We look forward to seeing you on the road supporting the important work of the Amy Gillett Foundation and Bicycle SA.
Great early bird registration prizes from Ground Effect cycle clothing up for grabs too.

Remembering Amy
The Amy Gillett Foundation isvery thankful to all those individuals who plan on taking part in Amy's RideSouth Australia this year. The ride not only provides a great fun experiencefor those that take part, but it helps to communicate increased awareness aboutthe Foundation and our messages to help keep everyone safe on our roads -whether it is on two wheels or four.
In 2010, the Foundation willallocate a proportion of the funds raised from the registrations and additionalfundraising kindly donated by individuals towards the expanded development ofthe Remembering Amy schools program. The Foundation's aim is to put inplace a program that is able to be delivered and sustained to schools in otherparts of the country for years to come. Amy?s Mum, Mary Safe has beendelivering educational programs to primary and secondary school children inSouth Australia for the last 5 years and in that time as touched in excess of 10,000students. "I am continually challenged and delighted that I am able toreach more people through these opportunities" says Mary. "It isimportant that we educate the next generation of motorists of the importance ofroad safety".
Raising the bar on safety awareness
Funds raised from the 2010-2011 suite of Amy's Rides including Amy's Ride South Australia will directly contribute towards the development of the Foundation's 2011 Bicycling Safety campaign that will be launched in early 2011. The campaign will reach Australia-wide including major capital cities including Adelaide.
While there is a vast range of research relating to 'safety' there is a dearth in research that understands the attitudes/behaviours of the broad range of perpetrators responsible for serious injury
or death of bicyclists via collision with cars. Amy's Ride proceeds will help us work with cycling organisations and stakeholders - including state governments and local councils - to collaboratively identify and prioritise these vital research needs of the bicycling community in regard to safety, and will enable the Foundation to develop a plan to undertake these pieces of work.

Ride options
Note: 2010 details shown - updated information available mid 2011
Ride start times & locations
100km, 60km & 30km rides start at 08.30am from Flinders University, Bedford Park 25km ride starts at 09.15am from Marion Council depot - cnr Majors Rd & Morphett Rd, O'Halloran Hill
100KM
If you don't get out of bed for anything less than 100km and you quite like the idea of riding the Southern Expressway as well as having a crack at the famous Willunga Hill, then you're in luck, because this ride's for you.
60KM
But if riding the Southern Expressway is thrilling enough and you're not really a hill-climbing person, then the 60km option is the go. Factor in some picturesque coastal roads - plus a well-earned glass of the local drop and some damn fine food at the finish - and you have yourself the perfect ride.
30KM
And for families, kids, riders young and old, you can simply join the masses along the Southern Expressway for the 30km option, and before you know it finish at McLaren Vale, triumphant in the sun.
25KM
The Southern Expressway starts with a challenging hill climb. If you would prefer not to ride it, you may instead start at the top of the hill! You still ride along the Southern Expressway, but from its intersection with Majors Road, O'Halloran Hill. This cuts out 5km from the total distance, and makes for an easy start.
Everyone's riding to McLaren Vale. What about you?
