EGO TRIP

100KM MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE
CUDLEE CREEK FOREST, NEAR ADELAIDE

Sunday 13 September, 9am

Despite a few overnight showers and early morning cloud in the hills, sunny skies welcomed those who saddled up for a day of fun in the forest at Cudlee Creek. Bang on 9am, the flag went down at Thomas Hill and 66 riders set off with a fair tailwind on the first of up to 3 laps around the 33km circuit. First riders came through the 17km refreshment point in just under an hour and James Hanus was first to complete lap 1 with a time of 1hr 47m - the fastest lap time for the day.

As the day progressed Merlin Sprantz emerged with a clear lead and all seemed to be going well despite increasingly blustery conditions. Unfortunately mechanical problems forced an early retirement for Merlin and Dean Jones came home the eventual winner with a time of 5hrs 55m for the full 100km - an impressive effort, especially given that it included around 4000m metres of climbing over the whole course.
Chris Fryer came in second with a time of 6hrs 28m and Malcolm Roberston placed a well-earned third with a time of 7hs 27m.

Of the 3 Youth entries, no-one completed the full 100km, however Tom Russell completed 66km in 5hr 30m with Simon Nankivell not too far behind with a time of 5hr 45m.

Of the 37 riders who signed up for 100km, only 8 made the full distance - extremely windy conditions no doubt contributing to the high drop-out rate.

A further 29 riders signed up to ride the Alter Ego of either 1 or 2 laps.

There were no female or teams entries for the full ego trip.

There was one incident on the day which saw David Parsons take a very nasty fall near the bottom of the downhill leading up to the 24km check point. Thanks to all who stopped and rendered assistance at the time. And thanks to the ambulance services for their prompt response. Dave has been given the all clear by the medicos although he will no doubt be sporting a few bumps and bruise for little while.

Overall it was a great day in the forest despite the challenging conditions and thanks must go to all the volunteers who provided support with set-up, registrations, catering, refreshments, route marshalling, check points, etc.

Thanks also to Bakers Delight for supplying the delicious new Fit2Go health bars - they were well received at the refreshment stop and a welcome top-up to the fuel reserves.

And final thanks to the Event Coordinator, Dave Hughes and his team for the course design. They laid out a pretty spectacular trail through some great country. Many comments from riders on the day indicated that it was a first class ride.

See you all again at Ego Trip 2010
