Over 2009 and 2010, Bicycle SA will deliver the
Way2Go Bike Ed Program to more than 120 schools and 14,000 students across metropolitan and regional South Australia.
Bicycle SA has delivered the Way2Go Bike Ed program since 1995 in South Australia. During that time there have been over 80,000 students in years 4, 5, 6 & 7 that have participated successfully in Way2Go Bike Ed.
Way2Go Bike Ed is a national road safety initiative that encourages personal cycling safety, and the development of responsible behaviours when travelling and participation in physical activity for student ages 9-13 (years 4-7).
Through a considered decision making process in a practical learning environment, participants are given the opportunity to develop awareness of road safety and the consequences of their behaviour. Students are prepared for on road cycling and learn the skills and attitudes required for safe cycling in low to medium traffic environments.
The objective of the Way2Go Bike Ed program is to enable children to achieve:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the road traffic environment and the applicable law
2. The development of physical and cognitive skills to manage such an environment safely, as a cyclist
3. The development of responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off the road through participation in enjoyable learning experiences relevant to their ages and abilities
The Way2Go Bike Ed program operates over a 7-session period with one 1.5 hr session for each participating class each programming day or 10.5 hours of delivery in total.
A typical metropolitan program consists of three classes of 30 students enrolling in the program (a maximum of 90 students from each school), participating on 1 scheduled day of the week for 1.5 hours each week for 7 weeks.
A typical regional program consists of three classes of 30 students enrolling in the program (a maximum of 90 students from each school), participating in a 1.5 hr session each day and the 7 programming days run concurrently (excluding weekends).
Way2Go Bike Ed is proudly supported by the Government of South Australia through The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure and in some cases your local government organisations. The Way2Go Bike Ed program is of no direct cost to schools and no direct cost is incurred by students, however, there are some material costs that the school is required to provide. Including a photocopy facility for weekly follow-up and preparatory worksheets and nametags for each participant.
Please note: DTEI and LGO free programming allocations are limited; fee-for-service delivery options are available for schools and community organisations who are not eligible for this free programming allocation.

Bicycle SAprovides a diverse range of supported events that cater for all levelsof experience and welcome all ages of participants.
Co-ordination & Preparation
It is important that the schoolnominate a teacher to coordinate the school's involvement in Way2Go Bike Ed,to maintain communication between Bicycle SA and the school during theapplication procedure, scheduling and program delivery. It is thereforenecessary that supervising and participating teachers once successfulin securing Way2Go Bike Ed programming, attend a program co-ordination session(1 hour) between weeks 3-4 of the term prior to your participation, conducted at a mutually convenient time at your school. A resource kitfor teachers' reference will be issued at this session including, booklets, parent carer information sheets and student handouts etcready for immediate distribution.
Resource Requirements
It is theresponsibility of the students and school to provide some helmets andbikes for the duration of the program. Bicycle SA can provide up to 15bicycles and 20 helmets for student use during programming. Additionalbikes can be considered, but may incur a cost to the school. Pleasesurvey your students to determine the level of bike and helmetownership at you school. The school should also consider provision ofsecure bike parking for the increased number of bicycles that will beat the school during the program.
Forapproximately the first 5 hours or sessions 1-3 (first 3weeks/sessions) we require a classroom delivery area and as muchplayground asphalt space available to conduct the off road component ofthe course (approx 2 tennis courts in size). Weeks/sessions 4-7 of theprogram we require a classroom delivery area and the students move tothe on road component of the course in which we utilise low volumelocal traffic locations within 1km of the school grounds to providetraining and delivery in a realistic road environment.
Supervision - School & Voluntary Staff
Please be aware of the Staff to Student Supervision Ratio and the implications this has for conducting Way2Go Bike Ed at your school.
The ratio for on-road cycling is 1:5in South Australia and Bicycle SA will supply 3 specialist instructorsfor the entire duration of the program as well as to assist schools inmeeting the DECS Guidelines, a 4th specialist Bicycle SA instructor is provided for the duration of the on-road component, usually weeks/sessions 4-7 inclusive.
The school must ascertain the number of students participating per class and provide extra staff if required.
Should class numbers be between 26-30, the school will be required to seek the assistance of a 2ndschool staff member for the duration of the on-road component, usuallyweeks/sessions 4-7 inclusive. This staff member must be qualified tomaintain independent duty of care over the participating students intheir class group. This may exclude some SSO's and support staff formfulfilling this role.
You may wish to draw on your parentand community networks to assist with programming, and we welcome anyparent or community volunteers to be a part of the program. Pleasenote, these people are considered to be voluntary staff under theguidelines and do not contribute to the student teacher duty ofcare ratio. The school must independently vet these volunteers inaccordance with standard school / departmental procedures.
Bicycle SA understands and respectsthat it is the responsibility of the principal or school administrationstaff to decide if staff are suitably qualified for participation andsupervision of the activity. However, for the safety of allparticipants, we require that the school staff participating be:
Competent cyclists
Confident to cycle in the road traffic environment
Have good knowledge of the road rules as they apply in SA
Own or have access to a suitable bike and helmet for the duration of the program
Be qualified to maintain independent duty of care over the participating students in their class group
We strongly encourage teachers andsupervisors to actively participate in the program and model bikehandling and riding skills.
