Welcome to our most innovative event in 2011, the World Future Cycle Challenge, a unique event that mixes cutting edge technology and cycling.
The World Future Cycle Challenge tests the skills, strategies, commitment, fitness and technical prowess of teams from all over Australia and the rest of the world.
From 19 to 27 November 2011, we will be welcoming competitors in different disciplines, challenging for a place on the podium. There will be Solar Cycles, Production Electric Cycles, Pedal Prix and Human Powered Cycles, as well as Experimental Cycles. The World Future Cycle Challenge might be referred to as a "race"; however an event that utilises public roads and whose regulations require adherence to the traffic laws cannot really be described as such by commonly accepted definitions. Future Cycle racing is very different. The event is not a race, but a challenge - an energy efficiency challenge. It is all about creating a balance between sustainable speed and endurance, energy management and strategic planning. If you're seeking thrills and spills, well this is Brain-Sport. An opportunity to prove to the world that advanced technology can provide new and better solutions to transport and mobility. Nextyear, for the first time, the route will showcase South Australia's spectacular River Murray and Fleurieu regions, beginning in Renmark and finishing in Adelaide. The stages are a mix of long flat stages and short hill stages, as well as time trials and - new for next year - one closed circuit stage. So get your heads together, prime your cogs with technical creativity and start planning for what promises tobe a fantastic experience.
The World Future Cycle Challenge is undoubtedly a great adventure. Some say it's the adventure of a lifetime. In addition, the World Future Cycle Challenge champions the creative integration of personal development with technical and scientific expertise across a wide range of exciting disciplines. It is truly the Brain-Sport of the 21st century.
The World Future Cycle Challenge is undoubtedly the most arduous event of its type. The event starts in the riverside town of Renmark on the bank of the mighty River Murray. Positioned near the border with Victoria and New South Wales, this is the perfect location from which to embark on this great adventure, which takes participants through some of the most beautiful parts of Australia: the Riverland, Murraylands, Barossa Valley, Fleurieu Peninsula and Mt Lofty Ranges regions of South Australia. Overnight stops are made at towns and communities in these regions.
Each team may be required to host an Official Observer who will travel with them to ensure fairplay. Control Points may be set up at intervals along the route, which, together with secret controls, gather information on team progress.
Teams are required to report to all control points and will be held for an equal time. Here, there is an opportunity to change drivers and perform safety checks on the cycle (although no repairs or remedial work can be undertaken).
As the event goes beyond the Riverland, the route takes on a different complexion as participants take on the Mt Lofty Ranges through to the unique landscape of the Fleurieu. The varied distances and terrain over each day may reveal weaknesses, but they will also provide opportunities for teams to use their strengths to make time.
Each day provides a new experience and new opportunity. Each evening teams gather to share stories of their adventures.
Once at the finish line, the cycles will go on display to the public and teams can relax and enjoy their success at having completed this unique challenge.
