Riding a bike saves you money
Want to put away a million dollars or shave 13 years off your mortgage? Believe it or not those are realistic savings from swapping a car for a bike, according to an investigation by the Bicycle Network.
Using credible economic sources the Bicycle Network has revealed the serious savings you can make running a bike instead of your number 2 car. The results are startling. Even if you a running a cheap used-car for getting in to work, it's going to drain $11,000 of your precious income each year if you are paying for parking. Riding a bike to work? A lightweight $1,000 a year. And that's a good bike.
"That gives an annual saving of at least $10,000 ($833 a month) for those drivers who switch to the two-wheel option. A lot of people run a second car without a clear idea of what it's costing them - if you run the numbers you'll find the bomb is costing you a bomb," Bicycle Victoria CEO, Mr Barber said. "There is so much more people could be doing with that money than burning it up in a vehicle that spends 94 per cent of its life doing nothing." If you are 45, you are going to have to be satisfied with half a million dollars - but a diligent young saver of 25 stands to make a million dollars to spend in their retirement. Think about it - you can pay yourself to pedal. A detailed report is included in the latest edition of the Bicycle Network magazine Ride On to be released in early August.

Draft River Torrens Linear Park (Eastern Section) Management Plan

In late 2009, URPS, in conjunction with Tonkin Consulting, Swanbury Penglase Architects and Environmental and Biodiversity Services, was engaged by the Adelaide, Campbelltown, Norwood Payneham & St Peters, Port Adelaide Enfield, Tea Tree Gully and Walkerville Councils and the Department of Planning and Local Government, to prepare a Management Plan for the eastern section of the River Torrens Linear Park. The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board has also been represented on the Steering Committee overseeing the project.

While the Study Area covers the immediate area around the River Torrens and extends from the foothills at Athelstone to the Adelaide Park Lands at Port Road, the Management Plan will not apply to the Adelaide Park Lands which are managed under the Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005.

Initial consultation was undertaken with key Government agencies and other stakeholders in late 2009 and an Issues Paper was subsequently prepared. In early 2010, two workshops were held to test the findings of the Issues Papers. The first was held with Government agencies and Elected Members from the affected Council areas, while the second was held with invited community groups (identified by the Councils) and was also open to the wider community.

As a result of these workshops and the community comments received, a Draft Management Plan was prepared and considered by the Steering Committee. After further consideration by Government agencies and the Councils, it has now been agreed the Draft Plan should be released for wider community comment.

The Draft Plan is being released for comment from 10 to 31 August 2011, with notices, advising of the release of the Plan for comment, appearing in local newspapers in the affected Council areas. In addition, a public information session outlining the key recommendations of the Draft Plan will be held at 7.00pm on Tuesday 16 August 2011 in the Don Pyatt Hall, Norwood Town Hall, 175 The Parade (enter off George Street). You are invited to attend this information session.

The Councils are keen to receive community feedback on the Draft Plan. A copy of the Draft Plan is attached above, and can also be downloaded from www.urps.com.au/report.pdf
Comments are welcomed and can be submitted by completing the attached Feedback Form and emailing it to geoff@urps.com.au or alternatively by mailing your comments to URPS, Suite 12/154 Fullarton Road, Rose Park SA 5067, by Wednesday 31 August 2011.

Park(ing) Day
Adelaide Joins International PARK(ing) Day on Friday 16th September 2011

PARK(ing) Day is a global event that was started in San Francisco by arts collective Rebar in 2005. Last year there were 700 PARKs in 140 cities across 21 countries and 6 continents, in Adelaide's first attempt we bad 12!

It's based on the idea that paying a parking meter is like ?renting' a public space, and instead of parking a car, why not park something else?

PARKs are surprising, fun additions to the everyday street environment, and powerful symbols of communities wanting to improve urban quality.

International PARK(ing) Day is an "open-source" project where Rebar has created a ?how to' manual that has inspired and empowered individual groups all around the world to instigate their own creative PARK.

Registration for this year's event is now open, and can be done through our website, www.adelaideparkingday.com

With the assistance of the Adelaide City Council, we are working hard to make this year bigger and better than the last, including the after party!
Adelaide PARK(ing) Day is being coordinated by a volunteer collective of designers (urban designers, planners, architects and landscape architects) and we are seeking the support of the:

  • Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA)
  • New Architects Group (NAG) of the Architects Institute of Australia (AIA)
  • Young Designers Group of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA)
  • Design Institute of Australia (DIA)

Anyone interested in helping assist the co-ordination and running of this year's event should contact the committee through the website, twitter or hotmail - all support would be gratefully welcomed!

Bike Angel and cherub Rosemary and Sonia

Perfect Bike Angel
Bike Cherub Angela reports on her experience with her Bike Angel: "Libby is the perfect Bike SA Angel. Her wealth of experiences and expertise made for a most delightful first time encounter and invaluable learning opportunity for me. Despite the damp weather, I greatly enjoyed every moment of our ride together. The Bike SA Angels and Cherubs Program is a brilliant idea. I'm so very glad that it exists - there are endless benefits to reap from it. In the light of Cadel Evans' superb Tour de France win, I hope that more people are attracted to cycling, especially female cyclists. (Is there a women's equivalent of the Tour de France???) I am certainly inspired by Libby and look forward to extending my cycling aspirations...Thanking Bike SA once again for such a deeply beneficial and highly motivating program." We're keen to hear from more Bike Angels who would like to mentor women new to riding. Please contact Chris at office@bikesa.asn.au or call 8168 9999.

From breakfast ride to Tourmalet
Bike SA Executive member Catherine Davies sent this report from France: "Here I am on top of the Tourmalet with other group members and yet I haven't always been an avid cyclist. About 12 years ago I had a sports injury and was advised that I should give up running. I bought a mountain bike and then heard about Bike SA's free rides program. I started with the Breakfast Rides and initially found 25km on the flat a real challenge. With the support of newly found cycling friends including Maureen and Ray Merrick I was encouraged to ride longer distances and found myself entering Bike SA events like the Grand Slam series. 100km rides in the Adelaide Hills on a mountain bike is quite a challenge so 4 years ago I bought a hybrid and started weekly rides in the Hills, participated in some Grand Slam rides and the Coast to Coast ride. A couple of years ago I decided that to celebrate turning 50 I would go on a cycle holiday to see the Tour de France. In May 2010 I bought my road bike and began to train for the event. On the advice of my physiotherapist (Julie Knights) I joined a gym (Satori Women's Health Club) and she devised a specific program to strengthen particular muscles. I discovered RPM classes which is a great way to have an indoor cycling workout when the weather is unfavourable for riding outside. I enrolled in Mega Spin cycle classes (www.megabike.com.au) and started cycle specific training with competitive cyclist Nick Wood (www.nickwoodfitness.com.au). I recognised the need to experience bunch skills so I joined the Mega Bike Saturday morning rides and on Sundays took to the hills with my Bike SA friends including Alison Lock and Susan Jones. 2011 turned out to be a fabulous year with Cadel being the first Australian to win the Tour. For me the whole experience was capped off by being on a Phil Anderson Cycling Tour (www.philandersoncyclingtours.com) with the legend celebrating 30 years since he won a yellow jersey in the TDF. I learned so much from Phil and his assistants Greg Griffiths and Laurie Noonan (UCI and Cycling SA commissionaires). I am now looking forward to more riding, practicing what I have learned and planning to celebrate my next birthday on another Tour."

REPEAT ENEWS
Moving Adelaide
Adelaide City Council invites you to a series of lunchtime discussions on various topics that will inform its Integrated Movement Strategy review. This is an opportunity for you to identify and discuss issues and opportunities in a variety of transport-related topics. Through its new Integrated Movement Strategy, Council is seeking to develop a world-class system of movement within the city of Adelaide. Come along (bring your lunch - coffee, tea and biscuits will be provided) and contribute. Your responses to the issues discussed and the solutions offered will all contribute to developing Adelaide City Council's new Integrated Movement Strategy. Council will make sure the discussion gets started - and then it's up to you!

The discussions will take place 12:30pm to 1:30pm, at Ground Floor Seminar Room, Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, 77 Grenfell Street, Adelaide.

The following discussions will take place:

Friday 12 August: Managing the ring route. How do we manage the ring route to be a useful bypass of the City while supporting the more intense land use along its length proposed by the Inner Rim Strategy?
Friday 19 August: Creating great public spaces.
What is the role of transport planning in creating great spaces?
Friday 26 August: Traffic congestion and what to do about it.
Is traffic congestion inevitable in vibrant modern cities? Should we see it as a tool to be used in promoting more sustainable transport?
Friday 2 September: Classifying our streets.
A road classification is a useful means of guiding how we want our streets to perform and what we want them to look like, for example, we can classify them by traffic function, mode use, or something broader, e.g. boulevards, laneways. What are the possibilities? What rules for priority between different uses and road management should be applied to the different road types?
Friday 9 September: Sharing our streets. What are the opportunities to integrate innovative urban design and movement practices to promote sharing street and footpath space.

We're looking for a wider audience so please extend this invitation to your colleagues and your mailing lists. However, the numbers in the room are limited; please book early as space will limit the numbers.
RSVP to Deana Luciano on 8203 7350 or d.luciano@adelaidecitycouncil.com. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these discussions.

Australian Single Speed National Championships
The coolest mountain bike event of year has finally made its way to the iconic Adelaide Hills for a weekend of racing, classic trails and single speed mayhem. The main race is set to take place at the Eagle Mountain bike park, and registration will be early on Saturday morning in the Quarry at Eagle. But, as always with the Single Speed Nationals, this year's event does not start, nor does it finish with the main race. This is a weekend event, designed to showcase the delightful trails of the Adelaide Hills, not to mention South Australia's best food and beverages. The weekend will include plenty of group rides, all the crowd favourites like the huffy toss, and a few new but equally quirky events expected by any single speeder who knows his freewheel from his derailleur. The weekend will include a dash for cash, the track stand comp and bike quoits, just to name a few. Participants can opt for a Racer entry and earn the chance to become the Single Speed National Champ for 2011, or you can just come along as a party animal. A party animal entry will include participation in all side events and group rides as well as the right to get stuck in to the Saturday Barbie, the after party, and the Sunday Morning Hangover Brekky Ride. Like a good South Australian hamburger, a racer entry includes the lot. So come along and have some easy going fun at the coolest race of the year. Join single speeders from all over the country and let the Adelaide Mountain Bike Club and the Adelaide Single Speed Society treat you to some good old fashioned South Australian Hospitality. And don't forget your superhero kit.

When: The weekend of 24 and 25 September 2011.
Where: The main race to be held at the Eagle Mountain Bike Park, however the event will showcase a range of classic Adelaide Trails and drinking holes over the weekend.
Theme: Superhero

The Australian Single Speed National Championships is presented by Adelaide Mountain Bike Club and the Adelaide Single Speed Society.
