VELO-CITY UPDATE

Bicycle SA is attending the Velo-city Global conference in Vancouver, which kicked off yesterday.

Acknowledged as the world's leading cycling planning conference, the week ahead will offer many unique opportunities to seek out the latest trends in creating a cycle friendly community.

Importantly, with Adelaide hosting the 2014 conference, Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood is also in town as a guest presenter as well as to progress planning for 2014.

It's been a great opportunity to look at how Vancouver's cycling investments have created a distinctively different community profile than we have in Adelaide - here (in the Downtown area), its clear bikes are overwhelmingly used for transport rather than recreation. Lycra is a rare sight...!

There is no doubt this high density urban environment makes riding for incidental travel easy and practical. Associated with this is a noticeable reduction in the number of vehicles within the City and a traffic management system that sees pedestrian wait times of around only 30 seconds. It really is just so much easier (and calmer) to get around. It will come as no surprise that public transport is comprehensive and frequent.

In the period that saw the City's Downtown population increase by 75%, car use decreased by 20%. Vancouver is definitely one the move and will have important lessons to share.

Big issues on day one? Bike share schemes, separated infrastructure and political will.

ANDERSONS SOLICITORS

"What are my legal responsibilities as a cyclist on public roads? A bicycle is defined as a vehicle by the Road Traffic Act. Therefore cyclists must obey all road rules just like any drivers of motor vehicles.  Cyclists have the same rights on the road but with that come the same responsibilities as any other road user." DOES YOUR BIKE HELMET MEET AUSTRALIAN STANDARDS?

If you have purchased your helmet online overseas, there is a good chance that it doesn't.  Should you be involved in an accident whilst riding, you may find that your insurance becomes invalid because of the non-compliant helmet.

Look on the bicycle helmet for the sticker or label certifying that the helmet meets the Australian and New Zealand standard (AS/NZS 2063) and has passed stringent safety tests. An approved bicycle helmet is a protective helmet for bicycle riders of a type that complies with AS/NZS 2063 and has a mark certifying compliance with the above standard.  Helmets manufactured after 31 March 2011 must have an identifying mark from a body accredited or approved by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) certifying compliance with the above standard.

As with your bike, regular helmet checks are a necessity - checking for cracks, wear & tear, fraying straps etc.  Any type of fall involving the bicycle helmet should result in it being replaced. If no impact occurs to the bicycle helmet you can get four to five years of normal use out of it before it needs to be replaced.
Replacement is needed as the plastic polymers from which bicycle helmets are made tend to wear in ultraviolet light, so the outer covering becomes brittle and less resistant after that period.

Accredited companies that certify bicycle helmets can be found on the JAS-ANZ website,
http://www.jas-anz.com.au. As of October 2010, there are three JAS-ANZ accredited bodies that can certify bicycle helmets to comply with AS/NZS 2063.
