LEIGH STREET TO BE CLOSED TO TRAFFIC With the announcement that Leigh St (in the city) is to be closed from the end of July for a six month trial, its time to think about what this may mean for local business, customers and transport. Some months ago, a series of community and business consultations were undertaken by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure and Adelaide City Council. On the agenda were the Leigh and Bank Streets precinct upgrades - to get feedback on the key issues from all user groups, as the business of public realm place-making continues throughout the City. Bicycle SA responded with a series of recommendations - among them;
- This north south corridor is critical in providing improved connectivity and a transport alternative to King William. It will also feed nicely through North Terrace to the proposed Adelaide Oval pedestrian and cycling bridge
- Cyclists to be able to legally ride in both directions on each of these (currently) one-way streets
- Adequate bike parking (rails/racks depending on aesthetics) to be provided, as the place-making process will be as much about enhancing the experience of "thoroughfare" as "destination", with lingering lunches and social engagement a highlight of Leigh St
- A shared zone for Leigh St and a closure to vehicles on Bank St
- Priority right of way for pedestrians and cyclists on the Hindley/Leigh/Bank intersection
- Clearly, work of this kind will create a better place for us to live and work. The re-prioritising of the road hierarchy for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport at the top of the pyramid will ultimately reduce travel times, congestion, stress and create a calmer and more restrained environment in which to experience all the city has to offer.
Whenever road space is returned to "people", the transformation is significant. We can see examples across the world today and now with Leigh St joining the growing number car free places, it is probably most encouraging to see the majority of local business owners on Leigh St fully supporting this trial project. The removal of car parking directly outside a business is still one of the elephants in the room when it comes to encouraging more people to cycle and walk. Recent work in Melbourne has shown that more and more small business owners are advocating for increased on-road bicycle parking to be provided by absorbing vehicle parking bays - why? Because those businesses have realised that people who walk and ride to their shopping 'experiences' do so more frequently and often linger and spend more. Drop us a recommendation on Facebook and let us know your thoughts on the Leigh St trial.

SEAFORD RAIL EXTENSION - NEW TEMPORARY DETOUR FOR THE COAST TO VINES RAIL TRAIL Following receipt of some concerns received from cyclists about lack of signage and the number of changes cyclists have to navigate on Seaford Road, a further audit of the temporary detour path has been done. With most of the Seaford Road bridge works on the southern side now complete, riders will note that for the most part of Seaford Road, prior to turning onto Grand Boulevard, the temporary detour is now on the southern side. In addition, missing signage has now been replaced to better signpost the temporary detour path. Loose gravel that covered some section of path has also been removed by street sweepers and the path will be regularly monitored and ?cleaned' as required.
