Streets for Kids
Bike SA would like to invite schools to
join us for the Boileau VeloAdelaide - School's Challenge on Sunday 18 March
2012.
Boileau VeloAdelaide is part of the Fringe Youth Engagement Program, and aims to attract thousands to ride their bike on car-free streets for this one-day festival of cycling in Adelaide CBD. By nominating to take part, your school can win a bike rack!
What is the School's Challenge and how can you win much needed bike parking facilities?
The Boileau VeloAdelaide School's Challenge aims to attract hundreds of students, teachers and parents to VeloAdelaide to ride their bike in a safe, supported environment. For the School's Challenge, schools need to promote the event to their peers (see the checklist below for ideas on how you can help with promoting the event) and bring as many people as possible to the Adelaide CBD on Sunday 18 March, to participate in any of the VeloAdelaide activities; whether that is riding the Mt Lofty Challenge, the free Family Fun Ride or participating in Streets for Kids. Each person that participates in any of
the Boileau VeloAdelaide bike activities (Family fun Ride, Mount Lofty
Challenge, Streets for Kids) gets a voting ballot. In the event
village, there will be collection boxes for each school that nominates themselves
for the School's Challenge. People can cast their vote by placing their ballot in a voting box. The school with the highest number of votes
on the day wins one of the five bike parking facilities. We are expecting up to 7,000 people to participate, so there will be lots of votes available.
What kind of activities does Boileau VeloAdelaide offer for students and what ages can participate?
We would like to invite your school to take part in our event and have designed school specific activities - Streets for Kids - to make the experience both fun and educational. Streets for Kids is an educational Cycle Discovery Trail that consists of various challenges and hands-on activities at different locations around the street closure precinct - Streets for People. Each participant receives a "Passport" card to get stamped off at each activity/challenge. For every full passport, a participant receives a voting ballot. Challenges/activities include an obstacle course, slow ride challenge, bike skills sessions, learning how to fix a tyre, naming the various bike parts, and more.
What does your nomination involve?
To take part in the Boileau VeloAdelaide School's Challenge, your school needs to promote safe bike riding. There are no formal commitments, other than helping to spread the word about cycling, and the event. Five winning schools be announced on the day as part of the event festivities. Here is a checklist of how your school could promote cycling and the event: - include event information in the school's newsletter
- include a letter to parents about the event and the chance to win bike parking facilities for the school
- hand-out event postcards at school activities and to parents (we will send these to your school)
- hang up 5 event posters around the offices and school (we will send these to your school)
- engage the students in creating a banner that can be displayed in the event village during the event; this will help promote your school on the day and draw more votes towards the school's challenge
- the event banner can be any design, promoting safe bike riding
- the size of the banner should be 2m wide x 1m high
- Design your own voting box. These boxes will be displayed at the event village and every participants can cast their vote by putting their ballot in the box.
