Bike SA's Angels & Cherubs Bike SA has set up a Bike Angel scheme to encourage more women to ride by putting experienced riders in contact with beginner riders, so they can ride together. Beginner riders can pick up valuable advice on riding in traffic, bike skills and travel routes as they explore their neighbourhood from the bike side together with their angel... Meet some of our Bike Angels and Cherubs | | Rosemary & Sonja
Rosemary has been riding for around 10 years. When she started she had
no idea how addictive it would become. She commonly rides 300km a week,
and loves nothing more than riding in the hills. She is the coordinator
of the Cobwebs ride at Glenelg, and is passionate about safety and
getting more women on bikes. Sonja has been riding for about 3 months now, commuting to and from work. I
bought myself a road bike & consequently have become 'addicted' to
cycling. I would like to ride socially but don't want to act like a
bowling ball going down the alley for a strike on my first ride, so I
sought the help of Bike Angels to teach me all the bits you don't learn
from commuting to work on your own. Sonja and Rosemary now go regularly on a ride together. | | | Michelle After two years of driving to the gym to ride on the spot it occurred to
me it might be fun to peddle on a bike that actually moved. I did a
one-on-one coaching course with Bike SA, and now own a 24 gear flat bar
road bike. Bikes have come a long way since the 3 geared little number I
rode as a ten year old! I want to be more confident as a rider so I can
join in with groups of my friends for lazy weekend rides (and
coffees!), meet new people, get fitter, and get around in a more
environmentally friendly fashion. It's early days for me but I am
looking forward to many more two wheeled adventures. |

As an English girl recently arrived into Adelaide, my new home, I can't
believe the choice of beautiful rides...Hallett Cove, Glenelg, Norton
Summit, Montacute, Adelaide Hills. Climbs to break you, views to bring
you back to life again, a perfect combination! I have been riding for
almost 6 years now, and I truly believe it is the best of all
sports....you can see lots of beautiful countryside, whilst socialising,
and ending with coffee and cake.....the dream team surely..... |
Join our Bike Angels & Cherub Program!
Are you a woman who is keen to ride but would like the support of
another rider, contact Bike SA at 08 8168 9999 or email
office@bikesa.asn.au. Even if you don't have a bike, you can hire an
Adelaide City Bike for FREE at the Bike SA office!
Or are you a regular woman cyclist who would like to encourage other
women to ride? How about becoming a 'Bike Angel', supporting another
woman who may be new to riding, or maybe hasn't ridden for a long time?
If you are interested please contact Chris at
office@bikesa.asn.au with details of the type of rider you would like
to support (e.g. absolute beginner or long-term lapsed rider), your
possible commitment (e.g. once a week for 4 weeks) and distance from
home you are prepared to travel to meet up with your ride partner. Extra Support Try our 3 hour Cyclesafe One on One Coaching Course with Bike SA's accredited Bike Ed staff if you lack total confidence on your bike. We'll get you going with the right bike skills, boast the confidence, then pair you up with a Bike Angel for regular rides to keep practicing - like Mary did."The One on One coaching session set me up really well for commuting to work (about 5km, mostly on bike paths).
I now feel more confident on my commute and am thinking of setting a
goal of riding the 35km circuit in the Gear Up Girl challenge. Buddying
with a more experienced rider for some weekend rides to get a feel (and
some skills / advice / confidence) for riding over a longer distance
will build up my fitness and confidence enough to join one of the
Saturday ride groups or feel good about heading off on my own for a
training ride." (Mary) | |
